The Constrictor

The latest body of work by our acclaimed glass artist Allister Malcolm explores the intricate beauty and fierce elegance of serpents “Constrictor,”  showcases the artist’s mastery in layering and cutting glass to reveal textures of snakeskin patterns and the eyes.

The inspiration behind “Constrictor” stems from the primal power and silent watchfulness of these creatures. The piece encapsulates the tension between beauty and danger, illustrating a snake enacting its constriction with a sense of motion and pressure that seems to threaten the very shape of the glass vase it envelops. The snake appears to squeeze the vessel, distorting its form while simultaneously highlighting the fragility and resilience inherent in this relationship. This work invites viewers to contemplate themes of vulnerability and transformation, celebrating the serpent’s symbolism across cultures as a symbol of rebirth, protection, and wisdom.
